The Chase, a bi-annual Street Racing Festival run by Mohammad Al Falasi and the team at Motorsport Solutions, once again graced the Dubai Autodrome complex, UAE, with the usual mix of motorsport, entertainment and show cars we have come to expect from the event.
It may only be the third running of The Chase, but it has quickly become an established part of the calendar for UAE car junkies looking for an automotive fix. This weekend’s event was also tagged onto the end of National Race Day (which included a new champion being crowned in the NGK Racing Series), ensuring a double overdose of petrolhead shenanigans with a little bit of something for everyone.
Within the enclosed area in the paddock at the Dubai Autodrome, round six of UAE Auto-X was going down with much furious anger, spinning of wheels and, occasionally, accidental enabling of windscreen wipers.
The UAE Auto-X Championship has burst out of the amateur league this year and is a clear demonstration of not only driver talent in the region but the burgeoning motorsport scene developing around us. That isn’t to say the drivers were going to get it easy this round.
A devilishly tight and twisty configuration was compounded by a layer of sand between tyre and traction. Although this caught many drivers out, others seemed to be using the dusty conditions to their advantage in negotiating the cones.
Simultaneously, the drift squad were getting their sideways on for round five of Drift UAE Championship. Without doubt, the spectacle of professional drifters pulled the biggest crowd during The Chase.
The Al Jazirah Ford Racing Team Mustangs roared through the series of turns in a twin V8 cacophony of American muscle. I am still fond of the old school JDM cool but there is no denying displacement is a potent weapon in the drifter’s arsenal.
It was Muath Al-Essa that drifted ahead of his teammate Abdulhadi Al-Qahtani in the end to secure second place in a drift series that is rapidly approaching international level.
Hatim Natto, who was Doing The Dew for the Dew Crew in the Mountain Dew FD RX-7, took the Drift UAE event top spot. A Saudi 1-2-3 proved, at this round at least, that KSA is one sideways step ahead of the UAE game.
Drift on a slightly smaller scale was taking place within the confines of the pit area. Extreme Hobbies and Dub Drift were running a Drift King Competition in 1:8 scale.
With rounds of Auto-X and Drift UAE mixed in with a car show, open drag strip event and many other activities, The Chase continues to up the ante as to what is possible in a single day, a single venue and a single determination to bring together an electric mix of automotive passions.
However, with enough petrol fumes sniffed for one day, it was eventually time for the crankandpiston crew to Bug out. Looking forward to the next one when the long summer months are finally over.
